Formed in 1975, the Holy Ghost Spirituals represent another “super group” in the vocal quartet scene, as each member had fairly extensive histories in the scene before forming the group. Despite this history the group was rather progressive in their stylistic approach. They aimed to have a more dramatic, less restrained sound. This is largely due to the direction taken of their two lead singers: Juanita Wilson and Sylvia Smith.

The group was also largely funded and maintained by local support, though this was not hard for the group to find. Throughout their career, it was not uncommon for the group to perform at two or three different programs throughout the Memphis area in one single day.
